Material test report (MTR) review software compared

Tools that read mill test reports and material certificates, sorted by what they check against and who they are built for: mills, stockists, fabricators, EPCs or equipment makers.

The short answer

MTR review software reads mill test reports and checks values against a material standard. Tools such as MTR.AI and TestCert focus on mills, stockists and fabricators checking certificates against ASTM, ASME or EN grades. OdysseyGPT's Material Certificate Review (beta) checks certificates against the purchase order and bill of materials of an engineered-equipment order.

Key Takeaways

  • Most MTR tools check a certificate against the material standard. Fewer check it against the order.
  • Who the tool is built for matters: a stockist receiving thousands of certificates has a different job from an equipment maker proving one order.
  • Traceability is a separate check: linking the heat number to the part and the bill of materials.
  • OdysseyGPT's material tools are in beta.

What MTR review software does

A material test report (MTR), or mill test certificate, reports the chemistry and test results for a heat of material. Review software reads the certificate, often a scanned PDF, pulls out the values and compares them with a rule set. The main difference between tools is the rule set: the material standard alone, or the standard plus the customer's purchase requirements. For the manual method, see how to review a material test report.

Standard check or order check?

A certificate can meet ASTM A350 LF2 and still fail an order that asks for impact tests at a colder temperature, a hardness cap for sour service or a 3.2 certificate. Mills and stockists mostly need the standard check. Equipment makers and their customers also need the order check, because the customer's specification is what the record book is judged against.

Where OdysseyGPT falls short

  • Its material tools are in beta. We onboard each team ourselves; there is no self-serve sign-up.
  • It does not issue certificates of conformance or manage stock.
  • It is not built for very high certificate volumes at goods-in, which stockist tools target.
  • A quality engineer still accepts or rejects each certificate.

How to choose

  1. Decide what you check against: the material standard, or the customer's order as well.
  2. Test each shortlisted tool on your worst certificates: scanned, multi-heat, dual-certified.
  3. Check that every finding points back to the value on the certificate.
  4. Check whether it links certificates to parts, or only reviews them one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

What software reviews MTRs automatically?

As of 24 Oct 2026, tools include MTR.AI, TestCert, Aekam AI and MetlSys for checks against material standards, Pathnovo for EPC-scale traceability, and OdysseyGPT (beta) for checks against an equipment order's purchase requirements and bill of materials.

Can MTR software check heat number traceability?

Some can. Pathnovo describes matching heat numbers to PO lines, and MetlSys includes certificate traceability. OdysseyGPT's Material Traceability Check (beta) links each heat number from final tag to certificate.
