What DocBoss does, by its own account
DocBoss calls itself "the document control system exclusively for process equipment suppliers". It says it covers the process "from receipt of the VDRL to creating the final databook", with document tracking and history, cover sheets, submittals, document placeholders, workflow management, expediting and reporting (docboss.com). Its final databooks page describes a hyperlinked table of contents, a PDF bookmark tree, title pages, running pagination and final PDF generation (DocBoss final databooks). It has a page for pump and compressor manufacturers. We found no public price on the pages we read.
If you need one system to number, transmit, track and compile supplier documents, DocBoss is built for that, and it builds the final databook PDF.
Three kinds of alternative
- Data-book builders: build and approve the manufacturing data book, often from the ITP.
- Welding, ERP or project-document modules: produce records or hold project documents as part of a wider system.
- Content checkers: read the records and check them against the order. They do not track submittals or build the PDF.
Alternatives compared
| Tool | Kind | What the vendor says it does | Consider it when | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DocBoss | Supplier document control | Cover sheets, submittals and databooks "for process equipment suppliers submitting to EPCs, A&Es and owner-operators". Builds the final databook PDF. | You want one system from VDRL to final databook. | docboss.com |
| MDB Builder | Data-book builder | "Structure, compile, and approve Manufacturing Data Books online." Generates the book structure from an ITP or template and assembles a bookmarked PDF. Lists a free plan and paid plans on its site. | Your main pain is building the book, and you want to start free. | mdbbuilder.com |
| WeldTrace | Welding management | "End-to-end welding management software for WPS and PQR, welder qualifications and continuity, weld mapping, inspection, NDE and data books." | Welding records are most of your book. | weldtrace.com |
| WeldLog | Welding records (UK) | "Weld records and MRBs for UK fabricators", for EN 1090 and ISO 3834 shops; records go in "as the job runs". | You are a UK structural or pressure fabricator. | weldlog.uk |
| Sharecat | Industrial document and data platform | "The Industrial Document & Data Platform" for complex industries. | You exchange documents and data with operators across a project. | sharecat-saas.com |
| OdysseyGPT | Content checker (beta) | Reads your records against the customer's index and order. The MRB Readiness Check flags missing, wrong-revision and unapproved documents; MRB Traceability Verification checks the links between records; the MRB Compiler plans the book as a cited manifest. All three are in beta. It does not build the final PDF or track submittals. | You already have document control and want the content checked before you submit. | MRB Readiness Check |
On the buyer's side, EPCs and owners often run their own project document systems, such as Oracle Aconex, which suppliers submit into. Those are not supplier-side alternatives to DocBoss.
Does OdysseyGPT replace DocBoss?
No. DocBoss controls documents: numbering, transmittals, revisions, submittal status and the final databook. OdysseyGPT reads what is inside them. Its MRB Readiness Check (beta) compares your folder with the customer's index. MRB Traceability Verification (beta) checks that heat numbers, welds, tests and ITP steps link up. The MRB Compiler (beta) maps approved documents to the index and returns a manifest, flagging missing, duplicate, unapproved and superseded files. A team could use both: DocBoss to run the documents, OdysseyGPT to check them.
Where OdysseyGPT falls short
- It does not number documents, issue transmittals or track submittal status with the customer.
- It does not build the final bookmarked PDF. The MRB Compiler stops at the manifest; PDF assembly is discussed during onboarding.
- Its handover tools are in beta. We onboard each team ourselves, so there is no self-serve sign-up.
- It does not interpret drawings such as general arrangements.
How to choose
- Decide which job hurts most: tracking submittals, building the book, or finding gaps before the customer does.
- Run one finished order through each tool on your shortlist and compare the result with the book you actually sent.
- Check how each tool handles the customer's own index and numbering.
- Ask how pricing scales: per user, per project or per book.
